Hi, I’m Alastair. I work in data consulting and bridge the gap between engineering, architecture, and leadership. I’m a keen runner and do some of my best problem solving on long runs, where I can think about the problem and go around iteratively in loops, thinking of different approaches.

The last four years, I’ve been delivering a work package as part of wider programme to modernise part of the UK Utilities market. At its peak I was responsible for 30 engineers spread across multiple teams.

My interest in data first came when I was supporting a client server application with a SQL Server back end. I found a love for performance tuning queries and really getting my head around execution plans and how query optimisers work. That interest has taken me through a number of roles within the data ecosystem. And as the popularity of data has grown within the market, so have my skills.

The last 5 years, I’ve been diving into modern data engineering, primarily using the Databricks platform. I’m also a Databricks Solution Architect Partner Champion.

When I’m not running I enjoy rock climbing (primarily sport, but some trad). In the winter I enjoy skiing, particularly ski touring and mountaineering. Next year I will ski Gran Paradiso (4061m) and hopefully Mont Blanc (4805m).
